Theory: Barthes' Semantic and Symbolic Codes

Semantic Codes
The semantic code is a term which encompasses elements within the text which suggest additional meanings. These elements are named 'semes'. The seme acts as a connotation, which provides the media text with deeper meanings.

Symbolic Codes
Symbolic Codes are similar to semantic codes in that they also provide the text with extra layers of meaning. The symbolic code uses something to represent another thing, often referring to opposites which is explored by Claude Levi-Strauss, who theorised that there were 'binary opposites' which made it easier for the audience to decode a preferred reading.
