What does PG mean?
PG stands for Parental Guidance, meaning the parents have to either watch the film with the child or approve of it. They shouldn't upset or disturb someone aged eight or over. Not all PG films have a primary audience of children.
Properties of 'PG' Rated films:
- They will never focus on inappropriate topics for a child. However, there may be a moral message regarding topics like racism or bullying.
- Mild bad language such as "s**t" but context and delivery is important.
- If a child is likely to understand a sexual reference, and it is infrequent and not in detail, it is allowed
- If they are conveyed as safe or fun, behaviour such as bullying or teasing will not be condoned
- Weapons will not be idealized
- Some frightening moments are acceptable as long as they do not last a long time.
- Passing references to substances such as drugs and an anti-drug message are permitted.
Examples of films with a 'PG' rating:
The Incredibles (2004)
Mamma Mia! (2008)
Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993) - released in UK as Innocent Moves
Brave (2012)
The Jungle Book (2016)
I think it would be inappropriate to classify my trailer as a PG; children may find it frightening, especially if it goes against their belief in fairytales.
